On Monday, Kanlaon Volcano, located on the central Philippine island of Negros, erupted explosively, sending a massive ash plume into the sky. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the eruption occurred at 3:03 pm (0703 GMT), with a plume rising to 3,000 meters above the crater. Authorities have issued an evacuation order for residents within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano as a precautionary measure.
Video footage shared by locals captured a large cauliflower-shaped ash cloud rising above the crater. The eruption produced falling hot ash and debris, particularly on the southeastern slope. The agency warned that this magmatic eruption could potentially lead to more explosive activity.
In September, hundreds of residents were evacuated when Kanlaon emitted large amounts of harmful gases, further indicating the ongoing volatility of the volcano.
