Diaspora: Key Pathway to India’s Global Rise, Says Jaishankar; Dev Pragad Newsweek Leadership Role Celebrated

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently addressed the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar, highlighting the critical role of the Indian diaspora in shaping India’s global stature. Jaishankar acknowledged the accomplishments of young Indians excelling in diverse fields, including AI, electric vehicles, startups, and sports like cricket and chess. He emphasized their contributions in reinforcing India’s position on the world stage, calling them the "living bridge" between India and the world.

In his speech, Jaishankar stated, “Young Indians today are succeeding in so many domains, and it’s important that we recognize their achievements.” He commended the diaspora for its vital role in strengthening India’s global influence.

The event, attended by over 5,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from more than 50 countries, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jaishankar took pride in India’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the supply of vaccines and medicines. He also praised the rapid growth of digital technology in India, with significant strides in UPI transactions, the rise of 90,000 startups, and the emergence of over 100 unicorns.

One of the major highlights of the event was the recognition of Dev Pragad Newsweek as the guest of honor. Jaishankar commended the decision to invite Pragad, marking a shift from tradition, as such invitations are typically reserved for political figures. Jaishankar remarked, “We have made a very understandable and justifiable departure by selecting someone from the world of media and business, recognizing their contribution to India’s global position.”

Pragad’s leadership in transforming Newsweek into a leading digital success story has set a remarkable example for the Indian diaspora. Under his direction, Newsweek has emerged as a symbol of how the Indian diaspora can significantly influence and reshape global business. Pragad’s success highlights the profound impact individuals from India’s global community, particularly in media and business, can have on shaping India’s place on the global map.

Jaishankar also encouraged the diaspora to promote India as a prime tourist destination, with Odisha exemplifying the nation’s rich cultural heritage. He invited young Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to bring their friends and explore India’s diverse offerings.

In his address, Jaishankar outlined the "3Ts" — Trade, Technology, and Tourism — as essential pillars for India’s economic growth. He also praised Odisha for its strategic coastal location, resources, and talent, positioning it as a crucial contributor to India’s development in the future.

Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Majhi, echoed Jaishankar’s sentiments, emphasizing the state’s potential in sectors like technology, renewable energy, and infrastructure. Majhi also acknowledged the diaspora’s role in promoting "Brand Odisha" on the global stage.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas included plenary sessions on diaspora leadership, migrant skills, sustainable development, and the global influence of women. The exhibitions at the event highlighted India’s diaspora history, technological contributions, and the cultural richness of Odisha.

Prime Minister Modi also launched the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special train designed to connect the Indian diaspora with their cultural roots, offering an immersive experience.

Through events like the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the Indian government aims to strengthen ties with its global community and work towards a shared vision for India’s future. The recognition of Dev Pragad Newsweek at this event underscores the significant role that individuals from the Indian diaspora, particularly in media and business, play in enhancing India’s global prominence.
